Mexicali Fresh with Pip and the Krums!

Mexican food is a rarity in New Zealand. And Mexican fun done well is, well to be honest, non-existent. Last night Pip, the Krum's, and I went to the newest Mexican place in New Market. Denise described it as a Subway with Mexican food. Like Subway you order at a counter and tell the people what you would and would not like on your dish. For instance, it was Taco Tuesday so I got two hard shelled tacos with black beans, "salad" (i.e. lettuce), sour cream from a squirt bottle, hot salsa, and cheese. The place had the only self-serve soda bar that I'm aware of in Auckland. So, for a drink I had L&P (a "fizzy drink" said to be "World famous in New Zealand").
While the food was standard the company was sublime! It is always, always, always good to catch-up with the Krums. We took along a photo of friends from home and caught them up on people. They commented on how the kids look like their parents (i.e. Casson is absolutely a Haywood just as Xavier is a Boldt!).
They also caught us up on them. Essentially, they're fantastic! The girls are both athletic and accademic. They do track and field as well as swimming. Mackenna earned the President's Award this past term and Sydney is now top in her class academically - according to their VERY PROUD father! Denise is the President of the political party, United Future New Zealand. She will be in the run for Parliament in the coming election schedule to take place in October or November. The political system is a bit different here, but essentially it's possible that she will be elected as an MP (Member of Parliament) as long as Brian, her potential campaign coordinator, can convince the public to vote for her! Brian is obviously proud of Denise and the work that she has done to "singlehandedly turn the party around". Denise thought the phrase was a bit much, but after Brian described the significant influence she has had in the past year it is my guess that the phrase was more of an understatement! Denise was featured in a double-page spread in a (cheesey) Christian magazine. I have a copy so I can show it off to anybody who is interested. Speaking of magazines, Mackenna would want you to know that the family was also featured in a national ad for some sort of easy-to-cook meals. Someone they knew was in charge of the photo shoot and when the people who were scheduled to play the parts weren't able to show up the Krum's stepped in and became spokespeople (well, they didn't actually speak) for a product they have yet to try :) The ad is cool, though! Brian is finishing his doctorate and is PASSIONATE about a church that he and a team of people are starting. He nearly beams as he talks about the vision and the process they have been through up to this point. It's definitely a work in progress and the team is being deligent to seek God and follow his lead. Bri is on sabbatical from teaching at Carey Baptist College beginning next week so he can (1) finish his doctorate, (2) help Denise with campaign stuff, and (3) put more focus in to Tableside.
So, that's what's up with the Krums. They are a refreshing family to spend time with and I love them HEAPS! Before my next visit I'll have to have some lessons on making authentic Mexican food (minus the cheese moat) so I can cook them dinner and have something closer to the real deal.
