The weather has had a fairly consistent pattern this past week - sunny in the morning hours and rainy the rest of the day. The past two mornings I've ventured out to explore the neighborhood around Pip's house. Yesterday I kept to the neighborhood streets and found a school just up the road. This morning I went the opposite direction and found a park about five minutes walk away. This park is AMAZING!!! It's way more than a park - it's a native bush (forest) reserve that has a whole series of walks through native bush. It was incredible! I felt like I was way out in some exotic area as opposed to being just up the road from the subdivision. I plan to explore the place in the weeks ahead. Their are walks ranging from 20-40 minutes in length. I took a few photos of the sights today. I kept on hoping to spy Gandalf the Grey or Frodo -- it is the land of Middle Earth, ya know :)
In local news - the NZ government just raised road taxes for truckers so the truckers staged a (very cool) protest this morning where they came out in mass to clog up the motorways! Apparantely 2000 truckers were on the main motorway heading toward Queen Street in Auckland's CBD. It was all over the news last night so commuters had a heads up and, according to the news, many decided not to go in to work today because it'd be such a headache to get there. Similar protests are being staged in other areas of the world as well. I don't know whether that's made the US news or not.
I filled up the car with petrol today and felt like I was socked in the stomach when I paid $75. Petrol is $2.12 a litre here which is even more than we pay at home, apparantely. You do the math (because I'm not sure what the equation would be).
